An American man was remanded in custody accused of killing his father at a luxury hotel in Laois last week.

Henry McGowan (30) of 114 Clinton Street, Brooklyn, New York appeared before Portlaoise via videolink today(Monday, November 18).

He is charged with the murder of John McGowan at The Lodge, Ballyfin Demesne, Ballyfin on November 12, 2024

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said the accused was being held in a secure part of Cloverhill Prison.

The defendant, who was wearing a grey sweatshirt, confirmed that he could hear and see court on the video link.

“There is consent for a further remand in custody for service of the book of evidence,” said Mr Fitzgerald, who noted the book was unlikely to be ready by the next remand date in a fortnight.
