Two men who are each accused of assault in a Portlaoise pub have sought to have their assault allegations withdrawn.

Finbar O’Rourke (49) of 99 Laurel Drive, Esker Hills, Portlaoise and Shane O’Connor (23) of 1 Wilton House, Portarlington are each accused of assault causing harm at EJ Morrisseys, Market Square, Portlaoise on January 18, 2023.

Solicitor Philip Meagher told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that “both defendants wish to withdraw their complaints against each other.”

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said “we will have to send a file to get a direction in that matter, judge.”

Judge Susan Fay agreed to remand the case back to Portlaoise District Court on February 10, 2025 for an update.

Mr Meagher asked for legal aid for Mr O’Rourke. He said his client was working part time in a retail position and was also renting.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said he had a similar application to make for Mr O’Connor.

Judge Fay granted legal aid for both defendants and adjourned the case back to February 10.
