An American who is accused of murdering his father in a luxury Laois hotel has been remanded in custody.

Henry McGowan(30) of 114 Clinton Street, Brooklyn, New York, is accused of murdering John McGowan(60) at Ballyfin Demesne, Laois on November 12, 2024.

The defendant appeared in court from custody via video link wearing a grey sweatshirt.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald asked that he be remanded in court for two weeks to appear in person before Cloverhill District Court.

He said the defendant was being assessed by Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Stephen Monks  and he requested a memo of garda interview notes to assist with the assessment.

Detective Garda Ger Galwey asked to amend the original charge sheet to remove “The Lodge” from the address on the original charge sheet. Mr Fitzgerald said there was no objection to the amendment.

Judge Andrew Cody allowed the amendment and granted the request for the garda memos. He remanded the defendant in custody to be produced before Cloverhill District Court on December 13.
