Gardaí are believed to have foiled an attempt to fly drugs into a prison in Laois.

They arrested a teenager and a man who are suspected of flying a drone in the vicinity of Portlaoise Prison earlier this week.

The Leinster Express has learned that a member of the public alerted gardaí to a drone operating near the prison on Tuesday evening at around 7pm.

Responding gardaí recovered a drone and arrested a 29 year-old man and a 19 year-old man close to the high security Portlaoise Prison, which is located beside the Midlands Prison on the Dublin Road in Portlaoise.

Both suspects were held overnight at Portlaoise Garda Station. They appeared before a special sitting of Portlaoise District Court and were remanded in custody earlier today.

It’s understood the Irish Prison Service is liaising with gardaí and is carrying out its own investigating following the incident.
