A man appeared in court accused of careless driving causing death.

Conleth Dunne (64) of Brittas, Clonaslee is accused of careless driving causing death at Chapel Lane, Townparks,  Mountmellick on November 27, 2023.

Garda Inspector Joe Culliton said the DPP had directed that the case be heard on indictment in the circuit court.

Judge Andrew Cody asked how long it would take for a book of evidence to be prepared.

Insp Culliton said it would take around six weeks to prepare.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick requested legal aid in the case. She said her client had been suspended from his job as a result of the incident. She said he recently secured some alternative employment but it was only two or three days a week.

Judge Andrew Cody reserved the issue of legal aid and adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on February 14 for service of the book of evidence.
