Gardaí in Laois are ramping up their road safety operation ahead of the St Brigid's Bank Holiday weekend.
The operation, aimed at reducing the number of fatalities and serious injuries on the county's roads, will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday, February 4.
"As we head into the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday Weekend, An Garda Síochána Laois-Offaly is launching a road safety operation to help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injuries on our roads," said a garda spokesperson.
"Our focus will be on the enforcement of Lifesaver Offences, which are the leading causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions: speeding, drink and drug driving, seatbelt non-compliance, mobile phone use while driving and dangerous driving.
"Gardaí will be highly visible and proactive, targeting high-risk locations and times when collisions are more likely to occur, particularly late evenings and early mornings when drink and drug driving is more prevalent."

Offering advice to motorists, Laois Gardaí urged road users to stay safe, stay responsible; plan your journey in advance; never drive under the influence; slow down and obey speed limits; buckle up—every trip, every time and put the phone away and stay focused.
"This long weekend should be remembered for the right reasons. Help us make the roads safer for everyone. Make the right choices and arrive alive," added the garda spokesperson.
