Laois Gardaí have moved to reassure the public about the impact on policing crime that might be caused by the redevelopment of Portlaoise Garda Station.

The multi-million project has necessitated gardaí to relocate to Grattan House on the Dublin Road with others already moved to the MDA in Mountmellick. The station is not yet out of bounds for the public and gardaí but prefabs at front of the building  will used as a public office at some point during the2.5 year build.

These changes or a lack of knowledge about what alternative arrangments are planned by Gardaí have led to concerns that the gardaí have decided are of sufficient seriousness to make a public statement on how policing will be delivered due to the project.

"We've received some feedback from local businesses concerned about garda cover due to our ongoing move. We want to reassure everyone that it is business as usual at Portlaoise Garda Station.

"Our services remain fully operational, and there is no change to the level of policing or support we provide to the community. As we get closer to any changes regarding the building itself, we will keep you informed. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

"Your safety and security remain our priority. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
Stay safe, and thank you for your continued support," said the Garda statement.

The gardaí added that they will keep the public updated on when the public office moves to the front gate of Portlaoise Garda Station which is the main policing hub in Laois.

After many years of campaigning, former Taoiseach Simon Harris turned the ceremonial sod on the upgrade of the Laois Offaly Garda Divisional Headquarters at Portlaoise in November 2024.

He was accompanied by the then Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, then Minister of State for the OPW Kieran O'Donnell, and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, on Friday morning, November 1.

It marked the start of the multi-million upgrade of the garda station, which includes a three-storey extension. It is estimated that the it will cost €28 million and be complete in mid-2027.
