A man who took over €2,000 for work he never undertook was told to sell his van to pay compensation to his victims.

Patrick Kenneally (33) of 7 Leonards Court, Dunnamaggin, Co Kilkenny took a total of €2,050 from two people in Castleflemming, Errill between November 8, 2021 and September 23, 2022 for work that was never undertaken. He admitted to two charges of making gain by deception at a previous court sitting.

“Unfortunately we have nothing by way of compensation to give the court,” solicitor Barry Fitzgerald told Judge Susan Fay.

Mr Fitzgerald said his client had mental health difficulties and he also revealed the man was facing a similar allegation in Naas where compensation was also due. He asked the judge to consider giving him more time.

Judge Fay noted the man was unable to do community service due. She noted he had a van. “How much is that worth?” she asked.

Mr Fizgerald said the van was worth between €3,000 and €4,000. He asked the judge to consider allowing three months for the sale of the van.

Judge Fay said she would allow more time as it would insure the defendant had no excuses. “The van can be sold,” she said.

She adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on June 9 and told the defendant to have the money in court when he returns.
