Portlaoise District Court
A woman appeared in court for dishonestly taking thousands of euro for a wedding reception.
May Stanley (58) of 3 Slieve Bloom Heights, Rathdowney, is accused of dishonestly taking €3,500 from one person and €500 from a second person for a wedding reception on dates between February 1, 2022 and February 10, 2022 for their daughter’s wedding reception.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had repaid €2,000 of the €4,000 that was owed and she had a further €1,200 in court.
Judge Fay asked if she had a letter proving she was in hospital when the case was previously called last December.
Ms Fitzpatrick said the woman “couldn’t find the letter” but “she has two letters of apology to the injured parties.”
Judge Fay noted there was a balance of €800 outstanding. She asked when that would be available.
Ms Fitzpatrick said “we only require a short adjournment” and she requested legal aid.
Judge Fay said it was a serious matter and she was going to order a probation report. She granted legal aid and put the case in for mention on April 7 for payment of the remainder of the money.
She remanded the woman on bail to appear before Portlaoise District Court on June 9 for a probation report.
