Gardaí have issued a warning about a so called “tarmac gang” calling to houses in Laois in recent days.

They are urging people to always get three quotes when having work done on their properties.

Laois Gardaí said homes and businesses in Borris-in-Ossory, Mountrath and Ballacolla areas have been the focus of cold callers in recent days. They said the vehicles used by the cold callers in recent days appear to be mainly English registered.

Gardaí urged people to take precautions if approached by people offering services such as powerwashing, painting or selling goods.

  • Do not open the door to anyone before you’ve checked who it is and what they want. Use your door viewer and chain/limiter.
  • Check identification, where appropriate.
  • Do not leave strangers unattended at your doorstep.
  • Ensure your back door is locked when you answer a call at the front door.
  • keep gates to yards closed.

“We advise and encourage people not to engage with such callers. Don't open your door to anyone before you have checked who it is and what they want. They can be intimidating and refuse to take no for an answer. We ask you to be vigilant when out and about and report suspicious persons/vehicles to us immediately,”  gardaí said.

They are advising people to “at least get three quotes to do work” and to report any suspicious vehicles, activity or callers to Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100 or any garda station.
