Gardaí arrested a man following the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Portlaoise yesterday afternoon.
The man, who was in his mid 40s, was arrested for intoxication at Main Street, Portlaoise at around 1.30pm.
Portlaoise Gardaí said the man was arrested near the main stage. He has since been released and is expected to appear in court at a later date.
Meanwhile, gardaí said St Patrick’s weekend was generally quiet and people were well behaved. They praised people for enjoying the weekend safely.
Gardaí said around 1.200 runners took part in the Streets of Portlaoise 5k road race that is hosted by Portlaoise Athletic Club. It was held shortly before the parade in Portlaoise.
“A massive thank you to the people of Laois and Offaly for their fantastic engagement and support throughout today’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations!
It was brilliant to see such a positive atmosphere, with everyone coming together to enjoy the parades and festivities safely. Our Gardaí had the pleasure of meeting so many of you — from young sports stars to community groups, and even a few familiar faces in costume!"
"Your cooperation and community spirit made the day a great success. Wishing everyone a safe and happy St. Patrick’s Day from all of us here in Laois-Offaly!” Gardaí said on social media on Monday.
