Man found asleep on a pallet in the centre of Portlaoise

The man appeared by videolink at Portlaoise District Court

A fine was handed down to a man who was found asleep on a pallet in Lyster Lane, Portlaoise in the afternoon.

Emils Brumanis (31) of no fixed abode, appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court via video link accused of being intoxicated in public at Lyster Lane, Portlaoise on March 29, 2025.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the man was asleep on a pallet in Lyster Lane at 3pm on the date in question. 

“Garda Moran woke him up and he was very drunk so he was arrested for his own safety,” said Sgt Kirby. 

He said gardaí then discovered that there were a number of warrants out for the man, who he said had no previous convictions. “My note was that he wanted to go into custody,” said Sgt Kirby. 

“I didn’t agree to remain in custody,” the man said. He told the court that he was looking for a job. 

Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €300 and gave him six months to pay.
