Laois gardai have penalised a motorist with illegal numberplates while a learner driver has had a car impounded after being stopped in the run up to Easter.

Gardai issued a statement on Good Friday. They sajd the Laois Roads Policing Unit (RPU) patrolling the Portlaoise Plaza M7 stop encountered a car which thdy said had "illegally tinted number plates".

They said the car was also coming against them on the wrong side of the road.

The driver was stopped and issued a fine and penalty points.

Separately, gardai said a vehicle was seized after the driver was observed turning away from a checkpoint.

"The driver was found to be an unaccompanied learner permit holder with no insurance or tax. Vehicle detained seized and Court proceedings commenced" said gardai.
