Gardaí have appealed to anyone in the Portarlington area around 6pm last Thursday who witnesses suspicious activity, to contact Portlaoise Garda station.

According to the Central Statistics Office (CSO), over 177 theft related offences were reported to Gardaí in Portarlington in 2024.

This accounts for over one third of all crimes reported in the area.

There has been much controversy surrounding the lack of staffing in Portarlington's Garda Station.

Portarlington's station opens just four hours a day despite having a population that is double that of Birr, which has a 24-hour staffed Garda Station.
