A man has appeared in court accused of rape and sexual assault in Laois.

The man (34), who has a Dublin address and cannot be named for legal reasons, is accused of two counts of rape and two counts of sexually assaulting a woman in Laois on November 1, 2024.

Detective Garda Conor Egan said there was no objection to bail if certain conditions were in place. These included that the man not contact the complainant directly or indirectly, that he stay out of Laois unless attending court, that he provide a phone number and remain contactable and that he notify gardaí of any travel plans. Det Egan requested reporting restrictions in the case.

Judge Susan Fay granted bail subject to the conditions and she imposed reporting restrictions in the case.

She remanded the defendant on bail to appear before Portlaoise District Court again on July 7 for service  of a book of evidence and she granted legal aid to Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald.
