Gardaí have recovered a car that was stolen from outside a house in Portlaoise in the early hours of Monday, May 19.
The black Toyota Vitz car was one of two cars targeted in the Ashewood Walk estate on Monday night. An attempt was made to steal a second car, a Toyota Corolla from another house on the same night. CCTV footage from a neighbouring house captured the car leaving the estate at 2.11am.
Gardaí said “the vehicle has since been recovered and removed for technical examination.”
Ashewood Walk resident Mateja Schmitz said “we moved to Ashewood Walk from Dublin at the end of 2023 - the promise was that this is a very safe and family friendly estate, yet this is a second successful car theft in only a year and a half since we are here.”
She said “the neighbour whose car was stolen on early Monday morning had an attempted theft last year. Our first door neighbour had their car stolen last year too.”
Ms Schmitz said “something really has to be done about the safety and security of the estates.”
A garda spokesperson in Portlaoise Garda Station said “we have no suspects identified at this time. Investigation is ongoing.”
