A book of evidence was served on a man who is alleged to have had a sawn off shotgun and drugs valued at over €13,000 in Laois. 

Jmaes Carroll (45) of 92 Cherrygrove, Portlaoise is accused of having drugs for sale or supply at his address on June 16 last. He is also accused of having a sawn-off double barrel 20-gauge shotgun and 23 shotgun cartridges and a mixing agent that is connected with drug trafficking. 

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the book of evidence contained 18 charges. He said the DPP had consented to the accused being sent forward for trial to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court on June 18. 

Judge Susan Fay issued the standard alibi warning and ordered that the accused be sent forward for trial to the next sittings of Portlaoise Circuit Court. 

Solicitor Michael Byrne requested legal aid for a junior and senior counsel in the case. 

Judge Fay granted legal aid and remanded the defendant on bail to appear before Portlaoise Circuit Court on June 18.
