Portlaoise District Court
An engineer who twice tailgated cars in his BMW was brought to court for careless driving.
Jackson Sabu (28) of 6 Patrick Street, Durrow, Laois admitted careless driving on the N77 at Granafellow, Abbeyleix on September 30, 2024 at Rathmoyle, Abbeyleix on August 30, 2024.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was driving a blue 171D registered BMW and was “tailgating on both occasions” and on one of the occasions he overtook on a white line. He said the man had been cooperative.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzgerald said her client was an engineer who designs machines. She said he was no longer living in the locality and was pleading guilty. Ms Fitzpatrick said the man was hoping that the court would allow him to continue driving.
“I can’t. There is discretion on the first offence, not a second,” said Judge Cody.
He said there was a mandatory four year ban for a second offence.
Ms Fitzpatrick said “I would ask the court to adjourn this so I can consider our plea.”
Judge Cody adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on June 12 for finalisation.
