A sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told an e-scooter couldn’t have been insured.

Abdisalan Artanhasan (20) of Room 13, East End Hotel, Portlarlington, was accused of having no insurance at Main Street, Portarlington, on July 26, 2023.

Andrew Dunne BL told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the offence was alleged to have occurred in July of 2023. He said regulations on e-scooters weren’t introduced at the time and insurance couldn’t have been obtained.

“It was simply not possible at the time of the offence,” Mr Dunne stated as he asked the judge to strike out the prosecution.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the prosecuting garda in the case was unavailable as they were doing a course in Templemore.

Noting the garda wasn’t present, Judge Susan Fay said “on that basis I will strike out”.
