A number of cars were seized by Gardaí in the Laois/Offaly Division as part of a National Day of Action targeting uninsured drivers on the roads on Wednesday, July 16.

Gardaí now have access to the Irish Motor Insurance Database which means they can identify in real time cars driving without insurance. Anyone driving without insurance can face significant penalties, including having their vehicle seized on the spot, a court appearance, five penalty points as well as hefty fines.

Taking to social media to highlight the clampdown against uninsured drivers, the Laois/Offaly Garda Division said: "On Wednesday 16th July, An Garda Síochána Laois Offaly conducted a National Day of Action targeting uninsured drivers on our roads. Here's some of the vehicles that were found being driven without insurance and were seized. Court Proceedings Commenced."
