A teenager who admitted having drugs valued at more than €13,000 has been given a suspended sentence.

The boy(18), who was 16 at the time of the offending, admitted having drugs valued at over €13,000 at an address in Portlaoise on May 8, 2023.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said the court had the benefit of a probation report and results of clean urine analysis for the defendant. She said the teenager was actively looking for work.

Judge Andrew Cody said “this is a serious amount of drugs here.”

Ms Fitzpatrick said her client was pleading guilty and had done everything that the court had directed.

Judge Cody again said they were very serious charges. He sentenced the teenager to nine months suspended for five years and told the teenager he was very lucky not to get a custodial sentence.
