Gardaí in Laois arrested two drunk drivers this past weekend.

On Friday July 25, Gardaí arrested a driver in Portarlington for driving under the influence.

That same night, another driver in Mountmellick was also arrested for driving while intoxicated.

Gardaí have confirmed that they will carry out their regular Bank Holiday Weekend road safety campaign this coming August Bank Holiday Weekend.

"There will be an increase in checkpoints, in the hopes of reducing road deaths and injuries this bank holiday weekend," a Garda spokesperson told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.

The campaign will target speeding, drink driving and drug driving, the use of seatbelts, and mobile phone use while behind the wheel.

Last February, six drivers were arrested for drunk and drug driving in Laois.
