Man admits careless driving in Laois

Portlaoise District Court

A man admitted rear ending another vehicle on the motorway in Laois.

Patrick O’Brien(20) of 21 Belmont, Shrewsbury Road, Dublin 4, appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of careless driving at Junction 16 on the M7 in Portlaoise on November 2, 2024.

Solicitor Michael French said his client was pleading guilty to the offence.

Garda Sergeant Jason Hughes described the incident as “a minor traffic accident” which resulted in dents to bumpers. He said the accused rear ended another vehicle on the date in question.  Sgt Hughes said the defendant had no previous convictions.

Mr French apologised to the court on behalf of his client. He said the “garda was very well disposed towards my client”. Mr French explained that the man “took his eye off the ball and should have been more attentive” when driving.

Mr French said his client was in between jobs but had worked in the bloodstock industry and hoped to work there again. He said his client, who was wearing a suit, was “suitably attired” for court.

Judge Andrew Cody said he would convict but not impose a disqualification. He fined the man €300 and allowed three months for payment.
