Woman accused of €100,000 deception in Portlaoise

Portlaoise District Court

A man has appeared before Portlaoise District Court charged in connection with the discovery of cash at a Laois hotel.

Algimantas Mikstriunas (35) of No Fixed Abode is accused of money laundering in relation to the sum of €22,500 in cash at the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise on April 12, 2025.

Hugo Mills BL said the case was before the court for the delivery of a book of evidence.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant had only recently been charged in relation to the matter. He said a book of evidence wasn’t ready.

Mr Mills asked that the case be adjourned for two weeks.

Sgt Kirby said he would endeavour to have the book of evidence ready but stated that “due to the exigencies of everything” including the holidays it may not be possible to have it at that time.

Judge Michael Ramsey said he would adjourn the case to Portlaoise District Court on August 21 for service of the book of evidence. He certified for a Lithuanian interpreter and ordered that the defendant, who was remanded in custody, be produced on the next date.
