Laois woman surprised Revolut insurance was cancelled

Portlaoise District Court

A court was told a woman who believed she had insurance through Revolut doesn’t know why her policy was terminated.

Rebecca Ann Lane (25) of Ashgrove, Mountmellick, admitted having no insurance at Harbour Street, Ballycullenbeg, Mountmellick on March 14 last.

Garda Roy Cooper said an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) alert for the white 131D Seat Leon led him to stop the car. He explained that the tax and insurance were out and a fine had been issued and paid for the insurance.

Garda Cooper said the insurance had expired on December 17, 2024. The woman had no previous convictions.

Hugo Mills BL said his client was surprised to learn she was uninsured and she had cooperated fully with gardaí.

“Within  a matter of hours an insurance policy had been bought for that vehicle,” he told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

Mr Mills said his client was an employee of the Irish Prison Service and had never come to the attention of gardai before. He said she got insured with Revolut and they sent out a tracker which beeped when the car was opened.

“She thought she was insured because this car was beeping at her?” Judge Andrew  Cody asked.

“The policy was canceled but she wasn’t notified. She couldn’t get back into the app with Revolut,” said Mr Mills. He said the woman didn’t know why the policy had been terminated.

“This is why she was so confident to be driving without insurance,” he added. He insisted she wasn’t being “blasé” about the matter.

Judge Cody said he “quite frankly didn’t believe whatever bluffing she is going on with” and he adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on September 25 for counsel to find out exactly what had happened with the insurance.
