A woman who was insured through Revolut had an "extraordinary" amount of unopened emails and was unaware her insurance had been cancelled, a sitting of Portlaoise District Court was told.
Rebecca Ann Lane (26) of Ashgrove, Mountmellick, admitted driving without insurance at Harbour Street, Mountmellick, on March 14 last.
Andrew Dunne BL said the insurance policy the woman had through Revolut had been cancelled. An email confirmed the cancellation “got lost” in her emails and she had “an extraordinary amount” of unopened emails, he told Judge Andrew Cody.
He said the woman works for the Irish Prison Service and was training in Dublin at the time the email arrived.
Judge Andrew Cody noted the cancellation was made on December 17. “This is four months later, she is still driving,” he said. Mr Dunne said “matters were immediately rectified” once she became aware of them.
Judge Cody examined the cancellation email and said “she was insured with AIG, not Revolut.”
Mr Dunne said “it may be underwritten by AIG but it is Revolut insurance.”
He said it was a genuine error by his client. He said she has “no intention of ever appearing before the courts again” and she was apologetic.
Judge Cody fined the woman €750 but didn’t impose a disqualification.
