Portlaoise Courthouse on Main Street.

A court heard a man was struck over the head with a shovel.

Joe Sweeney (31) of Killhill Campsite, Monasterevin, Co Kildare is accused of assault causing harm and production of a shovel at Killhill Campsite on September 13, 2025.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby produced pictures of the alleged injury during a sitting of Portlaoise District Court where Judge Susan Fay was deciding on jurisdiction.

“He was allegedly hit over the head with a shovel. They are quite graphic but, as the saying goes, a picture paints a thousand words,” said Sgt Kirby.

Judge Fay said she would be refusing jurisdiction based on the photographs but she wanted to know if there was an up to date medical report.

Judge Fay said she would reserve her decision until an up to date medical report from a GP was brought before the court. She then adjourned the matter to December 8.
