A man who was overheard discussing drug transactions was arrested at Portlaoise Train Station.

Ashton Hurley(18) of 58 Hillview Drive, Knockmay, Portlaoise, admitted having cannabis for sale or supply at Portlaoise Train Station on September 10, 2025.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby thanked the defendant for the early plea of guilty. He said the man had been “overheard discussing transactions” prior to his arrest at the station at 3.30pm.

“He made full admissions to being in possession of drugs to sell to purchase for his own use,” said Sgt Kirby.

He said the drugs were valued at €540 and the man had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald said his client was selling drugs as he was in the grips of addiction and needed to fund his own habit. “There was no monetary gain for him… he was simply feeding his own addiction,” said Mr Fitzgerald.

Judge Susan Fay said it was a serious charge. She ordered a probation report and asked that the defendant be assessed for community service suitability. The case was adjourned back to Portlaoise District Court on March 23, 2026.
