A jail sentence was handed down to a man who was intoxicated and stepping out in front of traffic while shoeless in Portlaoise.

Damian Fiodorowicz (44) of 29 Carmody Way, Fairgreen, Portlaoise was accused of being intoxicated and engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour at Mahon Court, Portlaoise on September 11 last.

Solicitor Barry Fitzgerald told the sitting of Portlaoise  District Court that the accused had been sentenced to 18 months in prison a week earlier.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the accused was highly intoxicated and stepping out in front of traffic at 8.30pm on the date in question. He said the man had no shoes or socks on during the incident and he became aggressive when gardaí approached. The man has 38 previous convictions.

Mr Fitzgerald said his client had been given a lengthy sentence. “I would ask the court not to extend his release date,” he said. He said all the man’s offending was related to alcohol abuse.

Judge Susan Fay sentenced the man to two months concurrent to the sentence he was serving.
