Portlaoise District Court
A teenager appeared in court accused of stealing dog leashes in Laois.
The youth (17), who cannot be named due to his age, is accused of stealing €200 worth of dog leashes from Maxi Zoo, Portlaoise on September 10, 2025, making off without payment of petrol valued at €62.12 form Ballybrittas Service Station and being carried in a stolen car on April 4, 2025.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant went into Maxi Zoo pet store with another individual and took €200 worth of dog leads at around 2pm on the date in question. He said the youth admitted to the crime and the leads were recovered in saleable condition.
He said the boy filled up a car in Ballybrittas Service Station at 5.40pm on April 4. The boy was a passenger in the car which had been the subject of an unauthorised taking earlier that day. It drove off and the fuel wasn’t paid for. He said the defendant had no previous convictions and admitted the offences.
Andrew Dunne BL said his client was sorry. He said the defendant “got a terrible fright” when gardai arrested him. He said the boy was in court with his uncle. He said he was willing to pay compensation.
Judge Susan Fay said she needed a probation report. She adjourned the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on December 18 for finalisation.
