Laois learner driver gets unwanted Christmas surprise from local Gardaí

A learner driver got a wake up call when a failed drug driving test led to the seizure of cocaine, a car and an arrest.

Laois Offaly Gardaí gave an update what happened when they were operating a checkpoint on Thursday, December 22.

"Laois Roads Policing Unit were conducting Mandatory Intoxicant Checkpoints last night in Portlaoise. At one of these checkpoints a learner permit holder was stopped driving while unaccompanied," they said.

Gardaí say that the driver failed a roadside drug test and was subsequently found to be in possession of a small quantity of cocaine. A statement said the driver was arrested and the vehicle, which also had no NCT, was seized.

Gardaí say drug driving is driving under the influence of illicit drugs and/or the abuse of prescription drugs. They say drug driving not only puts the driver at risk but also passengers and others who share the road.

"Even a small amount of certain drugs can seriously affect a driver’s motor skills, balance and co-ordination, perception, attention, reaction time, and judgment on the roads," they say.

The new oral fluid preliminary drug test, which can be conducted at the roadside or in a Garda station, can test for Cannabis, Cocaine, Opiates and Benzodiazepines. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

Under the new legislation there are thresholds set for cannabis, cocaine and heroin. It is an offence to drive while over the threshold and the Garda does not need to prove impairment.

Gardaí say that anyone convicted in court for drug driving you will be disqualified from driving. It is up to the judge to decide how long to disqualify you for however, minimum disqualification periods are laid down in the legislation.
