Gardaí are investigating two overnight burglaries just days into the operation of a special crime task force to tackle gangs in the midlands.

The two burglaries happened in the same area of south Offaly where a farmer was beaten with iron bars by a gang suspected of roaming the midlands and other counties.

The first theft occurred at a house at Fortal, Birr on Tuesday. A group of three men were seen getting into a black seven-seater/estate type vehicle at around 2pm on Tuesday afternoon.

The second incident occurred not far from Fortal at Sharavogue between 9am and 5pm on Tuesday.

Nothing was taken in either incident but gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward to them at Birr Garda Station on (057) 916 9710.
