Gardai arrest two men and seize car in Laois

Gardai arrested two Laois men and seized a car while on patrol yesterday.

The Laois Offaly Garda taskforce seized a blue Audi A4 that was abandoned in the Camross area at 12:45pm on Wednesday, January 24.

Gardai arrested two Portlaoise men nearby with a container of diesel which they believe to be stolen.

Both men aged 29 and 26 have been charged to Tullamore District Court where they will appear on February 15.

A special Laois Offaly Garda Division taskforce was set up last November to crack down on gangs responsible for a wave of burglaries and attacks.

Divisional Garda Chief Superintendent John Scanlon allocated a team of eight Gardaí to focus on preventing crime and catching criminal gangs who have left a trail of destruction in recent months.

The team work with gardaí on the ground and is supported by the regional armed garda Emergency Response Unit supported by national units.

In November, when the taskforce was launched, Chief Supt Scanlon said urged people to have family and neighbours' phone numbers programmed into their mobile phones for emergencies.

He alerted the public who own high spec cars, especially Audis, to be extra careful in securing their cars and store keys safely within houses.

He urged people to contact the gardaí immediately and not take matters into their own hands if they suspect that an attempt is being made to steal a car.

He said such calls can be hugely helpful in preventing thefts and in help gardaí tracking down gangs.
