A man who stole an unattended wallet from Supermacs restaurant in Laois, faced charges last week in Portlaoise District Court.

Michael Lawlor (44) with an address of 1 Cois na Coill, Pollerton, Carlow was charged with stealing property worth €100 on April 28, at Supermacs Portlaoise.

The wallet was recovered but the money was gone.

Defence, Ms Thomasina Connell, said it was “a moment of madness, a crime of pure opportunity for which he is extremely remorseful.”

She said she explained to the father of two that he should bring €200 to court in compensation, and he asked for five weeks to save it.

Judge Marie Keane convicted and fined him €100, and if not paid in four months a conviction of two months in prison.

“I am not a bit impressed with your attitude at all Mr Lawlor. No more of your nonsense,” she said.
