Stole from Portlaoise store due to 'gambling addiction'

A man who shoplifted clothes as he was suffering with a gambling addiction has been given the benefit of the probation act.

Before Portlaoise District Court was Kenneth O'Keeffe, Shinnagh Upper, Rathmore, Kerry. Sgt JJ Kirby gave evidence that on November 24 the accused went to Dunnes Stores, Kyle Shopping Centre, Portlaoise where he stole clothes to a value of €264.70.Defence, Mr Donncha Craddock said that the accused used to have a gambling addiction, but he has been dealing with it since 2014 and is attending meetings. Telling the accused that gambling was “an awful addiction, the silent addiction,” Judge Catherine Staines said she would give the accused an opportunity.

The accused was given the probation act, section 1.1.
