An inmate has been charged with assaulting a man in a prison in Portlaoise.

Yousef Palani(26) with an address at Portlaoise Prison is accused of assault causing harm to a man at Portlaoise Prison on May 29, 2024.

He appeared before a sitting of Portlaoise District Court via video link where Judge Andrew Gubbins asked if he had consulted with his solicitor.

The defendant said he hadn’t and Solicitor Aonghus McCarthy said he would stand in on behalf of the solicitor who was based in Sligo. He said he would try to contact the solicitor.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said “there is an allegation of a broken nose” and he said there was no medical report available.

The case was then put back in the list and called again later in the day when Mr McCarthy explained that he had contacted the solicitor who asked him to look after the case. Speaking of his client, he said, “he is a prisoner with some time to go.”

Sgt Kirby said he didn’t yet have directions from the DPP in relation to the matter.

Judge Gubbins said he would adjourn the matter back to Portlaoise District Court on January 11.
