Laois was among the locations highlighted by Gardaí for recording top speeds during their major June bank holiday road safety operation.

Gardaí were out in force across the country from Thursday, May 28 to Tuesday, June 2 with more than 4,000 drivers detected for speeding during the operation.

During that period a driver on the R430, Crettyard was detected driving at 108km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Nationally after five days of the operation, there have been three fatal road traffic collisions on our roads. The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 72.

A total of 187 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).

“Motorists are reminded to always drive within the speed limit. Always wear a seatbelt and never use a mobile phone when driving. Keep distractions out of the vehicle and give your full attention to the road,” said Gardai.

“Walking home or cycling under the influence of alcohol or drugs can also put you and other road users at risk. Cyclists and pedestrians should stay visible and always observe their surroundings”.
