Five drivers were arrested for intoxicated driving during Laois Gardaí’s operation

Gardaí in Laois carried out over thirty checkpoints over the October Bank Holiday weekend detecting drivers speeding, driving while on mobile phones and drink/drug driving.

Figures released show that 33 drivers in Laois were stopped for speeding over the bank holiday.

Nine drivers were detected on their mobile phone and five were arrested for intoxicated driving. The areas targeted by Gardaí included Portlaoise, Durrow, Abbeyleix, Portarlington, Ballylinan, Stradbally, Mountrath and Mountmellick.

Gardaí nationwide carried out a major roads policing operating from Thursday, October 22 to Tuesday, October 27.

"An Garda Síochána is urging road users to be mindful of and take extra care around vulnerable road users, in particular pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclists and pedestrians should ensure they are clearly visible in darker conditions and always observe their surroundings," Gardaí stated.

"Road safety needs to be a priority for everyone. Slow down and adhere to the speed limit. Never drive under the influence of drink or drugs. Wear your seatbelt and don’t get distracted by mobile devices when you are driving."
