'Deep sadness' tragic death of Laois man in workplace fatality

The late John Maher.

A Laois man has tragically died in a workplace accident, to the shock and grief of his family and communities.

John Maher, formerly of Rathevan, Portlaoise, lost his life while at work on Wednesday afternoon, July 2 in Rathdrum, Wicklow.

Married with two children, Mr Maher was living in Kilmoney North, Rathangan, Kildare.

Gardaí confirmed to the Leinster Express / Laois Live that the are investigating the fatal work place accident which occurred on Wednesday 2nd July, 2025 at approximately 3.30pm.

Mr Maher was fatally injured and died at the scene. His body has since been removed to St. Columcille's Hospital, Loughlinstown where a post mortem will take place.

The Health and Safety Authority is investigating.

"The Health and Safety Authority is aware of an incident in Rathdrum and has launched an investigation. As such, no further information is available at this time," The HSA said.

The Maher family announced his death with deep sadness.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of John Maher after a tragic workplace accident on 2nd July 2025.

"John will be sadly missed by his loving wife Tracey, sons Seán and Fionn, parents Pat and Mary, brother Liam, sisters Patricia and Eileen, parents in law Theo and Josie, brothers in law Tommy, David, John and Ciarán, sisters in law Dawn, Natasha and Laura, nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, extended family, neighbours, friends and work colleagues. Pre-deceased by his uncles James and Seán Maher."
