Laois County Council has launched a new initiative as part of what it says represents taking a leadership role on climate action with local communities to reach its own climate targets.
The local authority has launched a series of YouTube to showcase what it says are its ongoing efforts to combat climate change and spearhead sustainable initiatives with local communities.
It says videos highlight the council's commitment to achieving its climate targets and aim inspire and engage Laois people to participate actively in climate action.
The council says the videos are informative as they feature various projects it has undertaken to reflect a dedication to making a positive impact on the environment and promoting sustainability.
Some of the key initiatives showcased in the series include the Portlaoise Low Carbon Town. The council says that under the leadership of Chief Executive John Mulholland, it has led the transformation of Portlaoise into a low carbon town as evidenced in its streetscape, facilities, services, and the community's collective commitment to sustainability. Also featured are works on active and sustainable travel. The local authority says it is dedicated to improving infrastructure for active travel, including walking routes and safe cycling and scooting options, thus encouraging climate-friendly transportation methods.
Retrofitting council houses is also featured. The Council says that in 2022 it retrofitted 160 locah authority homes. It claims this enhanced their livability and significantly reduced their carbon footprint through measures such as external insulation wraps, new windows and doors, and the adoption of heat pumps to replace fossil fuels.
Supporting for Tidy Towns groups is another area spotlighted. The council said it is actively engaging with communities to encourage climate actions, such as the award-winning Abbeyleix Climate Action Project, which creatively involves the local community in sustainability efforts. more below video.
Another area under the lens is a project called Stepping Stones to Sustainability. The council says Laois Libraries have introduced this new program, to promoting climate literacy and environmental awareness among the public.
Energy Efficiency Measures is also focused on. The local authority says it has implemented various energy efficiency measures to reduce its environmental impact, including adopting a "Green Public Procurement" policy to source goods and services with reduced environmental footprints.
A Climate literacy programme for schools is also featured. The council says it sponsors this for all Transition Year students. It incorporates teacher training to encourage a more sustainable approach to education.
The local authoriy says the series features testimonials from residents who have experienced the benefits of the council's retrofitting program, emphasizing the positive impact on their lives and the environment.
The council adds that the video series offers valuable insights into the formation of its Climate Action Team and showcases a dedication to supporting biodiversity and pollinators.
Suzanne Dempsey is the Climate Action Coordinator at Laois County Council. She expressed her enthusiasm for the videos.
"Together for Climate Action in Laois showcases the collective determination of Laois County Council and our communities to combat climate change. This inspiring series highlights how small steps, when taken together, lead to remarkable progress in creating a more sustainable future for Laois," she said.
