Elderly people and those with special needs need a bus stop close to their homes in the Sue Ryder assisted living centre in Ballyroan, says a local councillor.
Cllr Barry Walsh has tabled a motion to the October meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District to ask for busses to stop right outside.
“Some of the elderly residents who depend on this service struggle to get to the current bus stop due to disabilities and during poor weather.
“It is 500 yards away. A shelter is definitely needed,” he said.
He also asks the coucil to request local bus companies to consider dropping and collecting Sue Ryder residents to their door.
“It's fierce important, with climate control the first thing is to encourage people to uuse public transport,” agreed Cllr Willie Aird.
“There’s nothing as bad as seeing people standing in the rain waiting for a bus,”agreed the Cathaoirleach of the Muncipal District, Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald.
“A lot of the residents are elderly or have special needs, this should be provided,” added Cllr John Joe Fennelly.
The council will now tell the National Transport Authority that a bus shelter is wanted for Ballyroan. They said the location of a bus stop will be considered as part of any future works, to ensure it is in the right location to serve all users.
