Vivienne Phelan, Fine Gael
What are your priorities?
Provision of quality social and affordable housing locally. Improve our roads, lighting, traffic management and the environment. Support our local voluntary organisations and sports clubs. Increased support for the business community in our area. Improved community facilities particularly for people with disabilities and young people.
What is the biggest issue facing your area?
In Stradbally, I believe the biggest issue is the lack of a community centre. The population of our town is growing rapidly, with three new housing estates currently under construction. We need amenities to cater for the expanding population and to provide a space for people to meet, and improved sporting facilities to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. More broadly, housing is a huge issue. I can relate to this being in my thirties and still living at home with my parents, doing my best to save for a deposit. Not only do we need housing but we need homes that cater for different needs, including single people and older people.
Why do you think you would make a good County Councillor?
I have a passion for public service! I grew up in a small family business and I am no stranger to hard work - working long hours and being available to assist people. I have gained a wealth of experience completing voluntary work over the last ten years and I understand the challenges of grassroots community groups. I have been heavily involved in politics for many years now and have developed a strong network that I can tap into for advice when needed. I am currently studying for a degree in local government, so feel I am well equipped with the knowledge and experience required to be a strong public representative.
