Laois Local Election Q & A: 'All villages should have a village plan'

John King, Fine Gael shares his priorities ahead of polling day on June 7

Laois Local Election Q & A: 'Fresh thinking and new ideas needed'

John King, Fine Gael

What are your priorities?

My priorities include a primary care centre for Rathdowney. My main aim is to continue working with all the groups and bodies in all the towns on community projects such as playgrounds and community halls and safety works attached to these facilities. I would like to see all villages having village plans because in Rathdowney we have a town plan and that is the way forward to avail of funding.

What do you think is the biggest issue facing your area?

The biggest issues are housing and roads. This time around there are 27 social houses on offer in Rathdowney and Erril and another 27 in Borris-in-Ossory. That didn't happen five years ago. At least we are getting a handle on the development of houses but I want to see more houses being built in all these areas.
With the heavy traffic, the big trucks and tractors today the roads that were designed 50 years ago are no longer fit for purpose so I would like to see more funding available for us as councillors.
I would like to see more of a garda presence on the beat in our towns as well.

Why do you think you would make a good County Councillor?

I'm a full time councillor even though I do part time farming. A full time councillor has to be available at all times to take calls and be able to deal with people. I do a lot of work in the area of grants for the elderly, Local Improvement Schemes (LIS) and make people aware of what's available in their own council.
My phone is going nearly all day everyday and I'm very glad it is going. The day you are not taking a phone call or doing things is the day you are not an active councillor and I am happy to say I am busy everyday. I'm asking the people to give me support to continue to work with them and for them into the future.

John King is a candidate in the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District. In the lead up to polling day on June 7 we will be featuring profiles on all 47 candidates vying for a seat on Laois County Council.
