It's decision time for voters in Laois as polls opened this morning for both the local and European elections.

There are 68,472 people registered to vote in the council election. That's a rise of nearly 9% on the 2019 local poll when the total electorate was 62,965.

Voters will have their say on which of the  47 local election candidates and 27 European  hopefuls will represent them in County Hall Portlaoise and the parliament in Brussels.

The people of Laois will choose 19 councillors while the electorate is also being asked to choose five candidates to become MEPs. Both councillors and MEPs will be returned to office for the next five years.

Polls opened at 7am this morning and will close at 10pm on Friday night, June 7.
