Laois Offaly Minister of State Pippa Hackett labelled comments made by Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald during the Euro 2024 final as "pathetic" on Sunday evening.

The Green Party senator hit out at Ms McDonald after she posted "Olé, Olé, Olé" and a message of congratulations in response to Spain's win over England in the final of Euro 2024 in Berlin.

Ms Hackett, who narrowly lost out in the Green Party leadership race, posted: "This is pathetic. At a time when we need leaders to build bridges."

Many Irish fans jokingly donned Spanish jerseys and supported our continental cousins over our near neighbours on Sunday. MORE BELOW PICTURE.

There was a huge reaction to Ms McDonald post on X, including from another Sinn Féin TD Réada Cronin who said she was "morto" for the midlands politician.

Others questioned why Ms McDonald couldn't choose to support Spain, while a third commented: "It’s call banter, even my English friends understand that. They would give it back in spades if they won. Don’t take life so seriously."

Others pointed out that "it's a bit of craic" between neighbours.
