ELECTION UPDATE: Catherine Connolly is holding a strong lead in Laois

Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick MD tallies

Boxes are being opened at the Laois Count Centre where Catherine Connolly appears to be on track to become Laois's choice for the next President of Ireland.

Early tallies all point to a clear victory for the Galway West TD who is polling ahead of Heather Humphreys and Jim Gavin. There are also a large number of spoiled votes.

A box from Castletown shows 81 votes for Connolly, 35 for Humphreys and 20 for Gavin with 16 spoiled.  A box from the Pike of Rushall show 95 votes for Connolly, 70 for Humphreys and 20 for Gavin and 20 spoiled votes.

One box from Rathdowney had 143 votes for Connolly, 70 for Humphreys, 9 for Gavin and 45 spoiled votes.

With 78 of the 116 boxes open the gap between Ms Connolly and Humphreys appears insurmountable.
