Pink Moon tents at the Electric Picnic
The Department of Integration intends to move 750 refugees from Ukraine to Laois to the site of the Electric Picnic after the festival ends in Stradbally.
The Department of Integration has revealed it is working with the operators of the Electric Picnic festival to re-use tents on the site soon after the event ends.
The first of the refugees who have fled Russia's war on their country will be moved into Stradbally from Wednesday, September 6 on a phased basis as the tents are moved to a nearby site.
The Department claims that the tents would be employed for six weeks meaning people would be accommodated there through October. It is also claimed that support and security will be provided.
The move has to be made due to the shortfall in accommodation for refugees and there has been a rise in numbers fleeing the war.
There are over 1,000 refugees living in Laois. It is not clear what consultation has taken place either in Stradbally or in Laois with local services such as schools, and doctors to prepare for the rise in the number of people who are due to arrive.
There are two primary schools in Stradbally. The nearest secondary school is located in Portlaoise. Portlaoise hospital has an accident and emergency department.
