Ancient Laois life unearthed by road building paints new picture of the past

M7 under construction in Laois

Progress doesn't always come at a price and he value of building of roads and motorways such as the M7 through Laois to our knowledge of ancient Ireland will be explored at a Heritage Week event in Portlaoise.

Livestock and Lifeways of the Irish Iron Age is the name of an event in the Laois town which will be explored by experts from UCC.

Archaeologists from UCC will present an approximately one-hour talk, followed by a hands-on session on zooarchaeological analysis of animal bone and refreshments. They explained more about the talk.

"Road schemes and research excavations allow us to paint a picture of life in the Iron Age in counties Laois and Kildare, that revolved around cattle, sheep, and horses.

"This talk introduces to the Iron Age in this region, why it is of national importance, and how the animal bone assemblages
recovered from archaeological sites hold the key to understanding people’s lifes in an otherwise enigmatic period.

Organised by Laois County Council, the event is supported by the Irish Research Council’s Coalesce Scheme.

It takes place at the Cube Centre in Portlaoise on Sunday, August 13 from 11.30 am to 1.30 pm.
