Laois Heritage Week features a special sunflower fundraiser that will help families living with Autism and Alzheimers.

Pick your Own Sunflowers is a Charity Event in aid of Laois Offaly Families for Autism and The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland is the name of the event at The Heath House on the final weekend of Heritage Week which runs from August 12 to 20.

The event is the brainchild of Roisín O'Connell Hussey who has organised similar events in recent years. During Heritage Week in 2022 some €4,000 was raised for Ukrainian refugees.

"Bring your own secateurs and enjoy family or personal time in an acre of sunflowers, on our little organic farm, in the beautiful Laois countryside. Watch out for bees,  butterflies and lady birds and a few thistles and creepy crawlies, as your walk among the sunflowers," say the organisers this year in their invite to the public.

Strong covered shoes are recommended, as the flowers are planted in an organic farm field event with no pesticides or herbicides used.

"So there will be stinging plants and insects," say the organisers.

Adults are asked to supervise children at all times. Parking available around the venue The Heath, Portlaoise, eircode R32 VH28. Access is limited to the sunflower field area only. The event is weather dependent.

The event takes place on Sunday, August 20 starting at 10.30am. No booking is required, but numbers are limited to a maximum of 200 people per picking session as follows:

  • 10:30am-12:30pm
  • 12:30-2:30pm
  • 2:30-4:30pm

All proceeds are accepted via donations at the entrance to the charities.
