Laois locals have banded together to form a new community garden.
Ballypickas locals have announced the establishment of the Ballypickas Community Garden Group, which is ready to launch this December.
The group has been developed quietly over the last few months, spearheaded by local woman Síle Casey.
"The group was established as a few locals who were interested in gardening were already growing food together, we just decided to set up an official group as the interest has been growing," Ms Casey told the Leinster Express / Laois Live.
"We established the group to bring together people of all ages and abilities who share an interest in gardening, nature, and growing their own food," she said.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener, a complete beginner, or simply curious about learning how to grow your own food, the group aims to create a 'welcoming space' for learning, sharing, and community spirit.
“We want this group to be a place where people can meet together, learn together, and to enjoy the satisfaction of growing and sharing food from seed to harvest, it’s as much about community resilience as it is about gardening," Ms Casey said.
The group is now ready to welcome new members and supporters, and will officially launch on Wednesday December 18.
The community garden group will focus on vegetable growing, flowers and pollinator-friendly planting, and developing practical skills for sustainable home gardening.
"The Ballypickas Community Garden Group believes that now, more than ever, communities benefit from spaces that promote wellbeing, sustainability, and connection. With enthusiasm already growing, the group hopes to foster a vibrant hub for learning, friendship, and the simple joy of gardening," the chairwoman said.
In the future, the group also hopes to run workshops, seasonal events, group outings to gardens, allotments, and gardening related events around the country.
"The Launch Night is on December 18th in Headen’s Bar, Spink at 9.30pm and will give anyone interested an opportunity to meet up and join the group," Ms Casey explained.
"All are welcome—individuals, families, beginners, and experienced growers alike!" she finished.
For more information or to express interest in joining, simply come along on the launch night or contact the group through: Ballypickas Community Garden on Facebook, Instagram or by emailing ballypickascommunitygarden@gmail.com.
